Den Helder

Den Helder or Plekenpolsemolen is a former double undershot grain and oil water mill on the Boven-Slinge south of Winterswijk in the Gelderland Achterhoek near the hamlet of Woold. It is a national monument. The earliest known mention of the mill dates back to 1303 when the mill was part of the manor of Plekenpol. In the late 19th century, the mill came into the possession of Jan Helder, after whom the mill was named Den Helder. In 1922, the mill was sold at an auction to Derk Jan Berenschot, owner of Berenschot's Watermill. In 1910, the municipality of Winterswijk purchased the complex and turned it into a swimming pool. This function was lost after the opening of the beach bath in 1933. After World War II, an ice cream parlor and later a restaurant were established there. As far as known, the mill still had a wheel in 1980. In 2016, the restoration was completed and the watermill is once again operational, albeit for electricity generation. The buildings have since been used as residences.
