The name Rijnauwen refers to the low-lying lands (auwen) along the Kromme Rijn. This fort is also part of the advanced ring and formed an important duo together with Fort Vechten. In the intervening area, the Houten plain, lay the largest access of the waterline. It was the task of these two forts to defend this access along with a land army. Notable about the fort is the reduit, a fort within the fort. This bomb-proof part was a last refuge, where the Dutch soldiers could stay for a long time before it became fatal for them. It was equipped, among other things, with its own drinking water supply. Unfortunately, the fort is not freely accessible, but it has been decided to make it a nature reserve; however, the fort is maintained. It now forms a whole together with the old estate of Rhijnauwen.
