In the 1st half of the 18th century the castle was destroyed by fire, but the then Lord of Hemmen built a large "modern" country house in 1757: "Huis Hemmen.
In 1931, the last Lord of Hemmen died childless and the estate was placed in a foundation, so that it could be preserved as a unit. During the battle of Hemmen in 1945, the house was destroyed. The ruin is all that is left. An army report in the spring of 1945 about the "battle of Hemmen." reports that the Allies encountered fierce resistance from the SS men, who had entrenched themselves in the castle. As a result, the castle was irreparably destroyed. However, the nearby church suffered relatively little damage. That was nothing short of a miracle
The former castle garden has now been restored to its glory. The walled castle garden can be found on a map from 1832, but is probably even older. The garden used to be used for growing vegetables, fruit and cut flowers. A grape greenhouse had been built against the north wall.
