The Veerhaven is one of the many ports in Rotterdam, located between Willemskade and Westerkade in the classic Scheepvaartkwartier of Rotterdam. It lies on the north side of the Nieuwe Maas, not far from the Euromast.
The Veerhaven derives its name from the ferry service to Katendrecht on the southern side of the Nieuwe Maas, which was established as early as the 15th century. Until the opening of the Willemsbrug in 1878, this was the only connection between the northern and southern banks of the Nieuwe Maas. The ferry service of the company Heen en Weer operated until 1968 when the metro took over the north-south connection. From 1911 until the opening of the Maastunnel in 1942, there was also a ferry service for vehicles, the wagenveer, alongside a service for passenger transport.
