The Westbroekpark is a park and district with an area of 18 hectares, which is located in The Hague, between Madurodam and Scheveningen. It lies on the grounds of an old hamlet, which was called Wittebrug. The Westbroekpark is with the Belgian Park one of the protected cityscapes of The Hague.
In the middle of the 19th century, the cities began to grow rapidly. The often peaty soil in Holland had to be raised with sand before houses could be built. The area where the Westbroekpark is now located was part of a barren dune area before 1860. During the construction of the Dune Canal, the adjacent dune was also excavated. The sand was used for the construction of Delftsepoort station in Rotterdam. A dune meadow was created for which a park plan was already designed in 1887 by Pieter Westbroek, at that time director of Gemeenteplantsoenen, in collaboration with architect Mutters. However, the plan was rejected.
