Groot Spriel is an estate with castle in neo-Renaissance style at Garderenseweg 150 in Putten in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The national monument was built by architect Joannes Pannevis in 1882 for Wouter Blokhuis, a returned administrator from the Indies. Previously, farm Veltwijck was located here. After his death in 1895, the house was sold to Georg Baud who sold it again in 1900 to the Meijer-van Loghem couple from The Hague. In 1906 a 25 meter high tower was built to a design by architect L.A. van Essen. At the top of this heavy corner tower is a large clockwork. On the ground floor there are several basement rooms. The monument has marble fireplaces in Art Nouveau, high ceilings, stained glass and is equipped with special carvings. In 1913 the management came into the hands of landlord Johan Willem van Doorninck, who lived in the estate until 1968 and had it expanded. After a fire during filming in 1988, the mansion fell into disrepair. A major renovation followed in 1996. In 2016 a sale followed with another renovation. In 2020 it was announced that it will be opened in 2021 as a care home for people with dementia.
