Vlak aan de route, op landgoed Heerlijkheid Beek, staat de dikste boom van Nederland. Volgens de Bomen Stichting heeft de boom een omtrek van 850 centimeter. De boom, ook wel ‘kabouterboom’ genoemd, is hol van binnen. Volgens een sprookje kunnen de kabouters met een liedje uit de boom worden gelokt; vandaar de naam Kabouterboom. Een meer plausibele verklaring voor de holte in de boom is een granaatinslag tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
De boom is een nazaat van de tamme kastanje (Castanea Sativa), die door de Romeinen is ingevoerd. De kastanjes werden geplant als onderdeel van de voedselvoorziening. Ook al is het een exoot, toch plant de boom zich hier makkelijk voort. De kabouterboom is waarschijnlijk ruim 450 jaar oud; al die tijd heeft-ie storm, brand en bliksem doorstaan.
