The Brunssummerheide was created millions of years ago as a result of landslides. There are still a number of earth faults in and around the heathland. This has resulted in large differences in height. Although the heath used to be more extensive, the area is still home to no less than thirty rare animals and plants, including five species of reptiles. This relatively rich biodiversity is anything but self-evident in this urbanised region. Without human intervention, the heath would eventually disappear completely.
