The Betuwe is best known for its large-scale horticulture, including fruit cultivation (apples, pears, cherries). The cause of this land use lies in the geology and soil conditions of the area. The Betuwe consists of an alternation of old stream channels, the stream ridges on both sides of them and the bowl soils further away from the river. These old river courses can still be recognized in many places in the landscape, including inner dikes. In particular, the stream ridges with some sandy material were extremely well suited for horticulture and fruit cultivation and form the best agricultural land in the Netherlands.
