At the Burmadeweg in Hazerswoude, the viewing screen 'De Wilck west' is located. From the viewing screen, you can see a meandering drainage ditch that winds through the peat meadow area. In spring, many water and meadow birds stay here. In winter, you can enjoy the presence of little swans, great egret, numerous teal, and various types of geese. The screen is positioned on an earthen slope and, due to stairs, is unfortunately not accessible for wheelchair users.
The area De Wilck consists of moist and wet grasslands. De Wilck is part of the Hollands-Utrecht peat meadow area. The peat areas have only been in use since the 10th century, and from the 13th century, a system of polders and water management has been established to manage the water. The Slingerwetering that runs through the area used to be part of the flow of a small peat stream called the Wilck, which originated from the high moor. The area is significant as a foraging area and especially as a resting place for little swans, which also forage in the surrounding area. Additionally, the area holds some significance as a resting and foraging area for teal.
During the breeding season of the meadow birds (March 15 to June 15), this nature reserve is not accessible.
