The 19th-century sheepfold on the Heuven estate is still a home for a herd of Veluwe heath sheep.
Heuven's sheepfold has the principle of a potting shed: the low-lying floor is covered with heather slabs and/or straw. During the day the sheep graze on the heath and at night they stay in the cage. That's where they leave their manure. This mixture of sheep manure with heather patches and straw is applied as fertilizer to the fields of the barren sandy soils.
The sheepfold is used by the Rheden sheep herd. The sheep of this herd are Veluwe heath sheep, a breed that was almost extinct in 1960. Partly due to the efforts of the Rhedense Schaapskudde Foundation, there are now about 1300 animals of this breed.
