Kwintelooijen nature reserve, part of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park. This park was officially opened in the year 2003. A fantastic place to relax. Years ago, the area was used for sand quarries. This has created a beautiful place where nature, sports, recreation and day camping come together.
Kwintelooijen has become a nature reserve with a wide variety of flora and fauna. This is partly due to the sand excavations from the 1970s. Nature differs from a waterhole, fen and swamp to heathland and erosion gullies. This has resulted in more than three hundred different plant species growing there. It is also home to many animal species, including Scottish Highlanders. As a result, a large part of Kwintelooijen is a protected nature reserve.
Archaeological research has revealed special objects in Kwintelooijen. The oldest object is a flint from around 180,000 BC. This object is one of the oldest objects ever found in the Netherlands. Only around Maastricht have objects been found that are even older. In addition to the flint, many other special objects have been found. For example, from the Ice Age. These archaeological finds can be seen in Stadsmuseum Rhenen.
