Zutphen is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands and became a count's administrative center around 800. To protect itself against the Vikings, the city was provided with defensive walls and moats and a castle. In 1946, professor J.G.N. Renaud showed during excavations at the 's-Gravenhof that there was a castle of the counts of Zutphen there in the 11th century. He found debris measuring 12 × 36 meters. The place of foundations is later marked in the pavement of the square. During excavations in 1995 and 1999 and during the construction of a sewer, pieces of wall of 120 cm thick, consisting of German tuff, were found. The size of the castle was set at 12 × 54 meters. A model of it can be seen in the Stedelijk Museum Zutphen.
