The 'Groeningsche and Vortumsche Mountains' are small drifting sand ridges or river dunes, which originated in prehistoric times (six thousand years ago). During dry periods, the wind carried the sand from the riverbed of the Maas. The sand was captured and fixed by plants that grew in this location. Over time, river dunes formed as a result. However, the sand was not fertile, so farmers allowed trees to grow for shelter and firewood. In this way, beautiful forests have developed here, with trees that are several hundred years old. During high water, these 'mountains' served as a refuge for animals.
