The New Fort St. Andries is a former military fort between the Meuse and Waal rivers near Heerewaarden. It dates back to 1812 and was built to replace Fort Sint-Andries from 1599.
This last fort is located a few hundred meters further east of the New Fort St. Andries. It was built by the Spaniards during the Eighty Years' War to protect themselves against the Dutch. From the fort in Heerewaarden, they had a perfect view over the river area.
