he sleekly designed fort Werk aan het Spoel near Culemborg is a fantastic location. It is a cultural meeting place on the Lek with attractive restaurants and a sun terrace. Artists show their creations in a studio in the old fort keeper's house. And various cultural events liven things up. Various recreational cycling, walking and strolling routes intersect here near the jetty of the Liniepont. Enjoy a delicious cup of coffee or a nice lunch in the restaurant Caatje aan de Lek.

In 1815 an inundation fan lock with an earthen battery was constructed in the Lekdijk near Goilberdingen. In 1848, the battery was upgraded to a fortress. Later, the inundation system was optimized and the fort was given four bomb-proof buildings. In peacetime, the dike road ran right through the fort, but was diverted in case of mobilization. In 1939, seven concrete shelters and two machine gun casemates were built on the fort. To the south of the fort is a high free-standing wall in a meadow. This 'bullet trap' is the remnant of a German shooting range.
