St. Bavo's is the only church in the Scheldt Gothic style in the Netherlands. It was founded by the monks of St. Bavo's Abbey in 959. The chapel at that time served as the starting point of the current church. During restoration work after World War II, sarcophagi with funerary paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries emerged. Every evening at 8 p.m., the porridge bell rings. In the past, this meant closing the city gates. Every year, Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion is performed here. In this atmospheric environment, the sounds come into their own even better.
