The Appelbergen is a forest east of the village of Glimmen, where you can also find swamps, fens and a sand drift. It has traditionally been a tourist attraction, where a swimming pool and a playground used to be located. Through the forest runs a medieval ''highway'', the Hoge Hereweg. In the forest the remains of two destroyed dolmens have been found. During the war years, twenty to thirty Dutch people executed by the Germans were secretly buried in the Appèlbergen. Despite intense searches, not all of these graves have been recovered.
Originally, the name was pronounced with emphasis on the a, so as the word apple. The shift in sound is the result that the forest was used as a training ground for years. The statement intended as a joke is now so well established that many Groningeners correct those who pronounce the name "wrong".
