After the breakthrough of the Meuse in the 10th century, Woudrichem became very favorable at the confluence of Maas and Waal. Naturally, this economic location attracted many traders and merchants. The core of the trading settlement was located on the Hoogstraat where the most important merchants, fishermen and craftsmen lived.
