Frans Hals is among the most famous and innovative painters of the Dutch 17th century, alongside Rembrandt and Vermeer. His swiftly painted, vibrant portraits of real people have inspired visitors and other artists for centuries. Notable modern artists such as Manet and Van Gogh even traveled to Haarlem to admire his group portraits of shooters and regents.
