Garnwerd originated in the Middle Ages. In the seventeenth century, the town played an important role in shipping traffic from Groningen to the Lauwerszee. After the construction of the Eems Canal in 1876, Groningen gained a better connection with the sea and the importance of the village declined. The church of Garnwerd is a beacon in the landscape for hikers. The choir of the church was built in 1229 and the nave dates from 1393.
