A wooden barrier over the forest path marks the grounds of De Eese. The route leads to the castle, from an elevation it watches over the surroundings. The Eese is a privately owned estate. It is popularly known as seigneury, the landowner used to be allowed to administer justice himself. These 'seigniorial rights' were granted by the monarch, often as a token of appreciation for loyalty. That judging was not an empty privilege. The lord of De Eese owned the 'right of neck'. Judging by the names Galgenveld and Kiekersveld – from which one could 'peek' well – there was actually a gallows on De Eese.
Fortunately, nowadays you don't have to fear randomness. But the area has certainly retained its own character. You won't find any information panels or route markers. As a result, the area looks unspoiled. The elevation on which the castle stands is a remnant of a motte, a medieval wooden castle, built on an artificial hill.
