In 1913, the Bernardinuscollege was founded in Heerlen, a school for boys. Soon, the demand for higher secondary education for girls arose. In 1920, the Franciscan Sisters established a secondary school for girls in Heerlen. The name was then: RK HBS and Trade School for Girls, which became better known as St. Clara College and was located on Klompstraat. The first principal, from 1920-1941, was Sister Xavier Nolens. The Coriovallum College was given this name in 1969 when St. Clara College became a co-educational school. In 1990, Coriovallum College merged with Sintermeertencollege and continued under the name Sintermeertencollege.
