Schans is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is located in the southwest of the municipality on the Lower Rhine.
The hamlet owes its name to the fort and redoubt Geldersoord that was located here. Between 1629 and 1672 there were already defenses in this area. In 1741 to 1742 a fortress was built on this site, on a peninsula in the territory occupied by the Prussians. The fort had to protect the inlet lock that could flood the area between Westervoort and Doesburg. When the towns of Duiven, Huissen and Zevenaar were added to the Netherlands after the Congress of Vienna, the fortress lost its strategic value. The fort was sold and eventually demolished. The remains have been assigned the protective status of national monument. In 2015, a partial reconstruction of the fortifications was carried out, including the integration of new construction.
