Huize Babberich or Halsaf is a country house southeast of the town of Zevenaar in De Liemers, in the Dutch province of Gelderland.
History
The house is mentioned in deeds from 1363 and 1380, and possibly dates from the 14th century. It is unknown who the founder of this castle was. In 1380, Mechteld of Guelders, Duchess Dowager of Cleves, handed over the castle to Ernst Momm. After the Momm family, who owned the castle for more than two centuries, it came into the hands of various owners and families. In the Eighty Years' War, Prince Maurice used the castle as a blockhouse in his State-Spanish Lines against the Spaniards. This castle, which in the Middle Ages was still a real castle complete with drawbridge, was demolished in the 18th century and replaced by a country house. One of the noble rights of Halsaf was the pigeon race. On the estate you can still see a white pigeon tower from 1785.The estate is accessible to visitors, the house and immediate surroundings are not accessible.
