Great Goor

The Grote Goor or the Bredevoortse Broek is a protected nature reserve established in 1999 between Bredevoort and 't Klooster, north of the Slingeplas. Together with nineteen other areas, it forms part of the valley designated as the National Landscape Winterswijk by the Dutch government in 2005.
The area is located along the Schaarsbeek. This brook springs from the Korenburgerveen and flows to the Slingebeek near Bredevoort. In the meadow bird area and in the meandering brook, many meadow and water birds can be found, such as teal, sandpipers, and plovers. In spring, quail, lapwing, and redshank breed here. To manage the grasslands, large grazers in the form of Galloway cattle are used. These small black cows can stay outdoors all year round. Even in winter, they find enough to eat. Only when there is a thick layer of snow do they receive supplemental feed.
