The Hengelo lock, or sometimes De Waarbeek lock, is one of the three locks in the Twente Canal, which has CEMT class IV here. At 9 metres, this lock at Hengelo has the largest drop of the three. The lock chamber is 12 metres wide and 140 metres long, with a useful lock length of 133 metres. The threshold depth at the upper door is 3.75 metres below duct level. The bottom is equipped with hanging roller doors with a central seal, making it the only one in the Netherlands with this type of door. The upper door is a more common lifting door. The largest ship to be gunned in Hengelo so far had a loading capacity of 2300 tons.
