The Aeilsgat is a gully near the sleeper dike near the northernmost village of Oudeschip in the province of Groningen. When the dike was still a sea dike, the gully was created by a dike breach during the Christmas flood of 1717.A legend was later attached to the geographical name, which is no longer understood, which should explain the origin of the name. It tells us that a farmer named Eilt drowned in the hole with a horse and cart. Before he drowned, lights could be seen above the water at night, after that the lights disappeared. The whirlpool is also known as Michieltjeskolk, because later someone would have drowned in the same way. It is also said that a mermaid lives at the bottom of the water. It was washed in during the dike breach that created the gully. She can no longer go outside because the dike has been repaired.
