The tar pits of Vasse, also known locally as De Teerkuil, are former sand quarries, which were mainly used in the years 1957-1972 for the legal and illegal dumping of chemical waste, especially acid tar. The wells are located in the municipality of Tubbergen, on the Tumuliweg near the church village of Vasse. The area is located on the moraine of Ootmarsum, just above the rift of Reutum. Drinking water is extracted 1.5 kilometres away from the tar wells, in the Vasserheide water catchment area.
