The current Grote Waterpoort of Delfzijl from 1833 is located in the dike at the end of the Havenstraat. The Waterpoort is one of the water gates that Delfzijl knows, there is also the Kleine Waterpoort, which is also called De Ruyterpoort.
The Waterpoort gate was restored in the 1970s and is still in use as a denomination. In case of a high tide, the gate is closed by means of a metal door. On the harbour side is a stone with inscription marking the spring flood of 1962.
