Until the 19th century, many farms in the Krimpenerwaard had a field on which hemp plants were cultivated. The plant, which grows over two meters high, is used for making ropes and yarns. On boats that were based in the Krimpenerwaard, a lot of ropes and nets were naturally used, and the proximity to Rotterdam and Gouda also created a high demand for ropes.
