Retranchement was once an important military stronghold that controlled the mouth of the Zwin. It originated from Fort Nassau, built by the Staatsen after the Twelve Years' Truce on a site where they had already erected a redoute in 1604. A kilometer further north, the Staatsen built Fort Oranje. Both forts were connected with two ramparts. Hence the name Retranchement Cadsandria. Retranchement is French for 'second walling'. The rampart on the land side was provided with three bastions. In front of this rampart was a moat.
