The history of the church in Wahlwiller goes back at least to the eleventh or twelfth century. But it is plausible that there was something of a church building much earlier.
The choice of the patron saint, Saint Cunibertus (590-663), who was bishop of Cologne for 40 years, suggests that there may have been a forerunner of the current church all his time. The history of the church became 'world history', when immediately after the war the church was completely painted by Aad de Haas on the recommendation of Father G.L. Mathot from Wittem.
Conservative critics caused such a riot that in 1949 the Stations of the Cross of Aad de Haas were removed by Bishop Lemmens at the insistence of the Vatican and ended up in the Bonnefantenmuseum. During the restoration of 1979-1980 they were fortunately placed back.
