Uitwierde (Groning: Oetwier), historical name Uitwierda, is a small village in the municipality of Delfzijl in the province of Groningen. The Church of Uitwierde is a Dutch Reformed church from 1839, with a separate bell tower from around 1200. The church of Uitwierde was important and wealthy. The church owned about 35 hectares of land that was rented out to the highest bidder. Until 1613, Delfzijl belonged to the parish of Uitwierde. The church originally had a moat, just like the church of Spijk. This was filled in during the 20th century, after which a walking path was laid around the church. During the siege of Delfzijl (1813-1814), the original church building sustained significant damage from plundering French troops. It was replaced in 1839 by the current Neoclassical Waterstaatskerk. During the liberation of Delfzijl in World War II, Uitwierde - and thus the church - came under heavy fire. The church suffered severe damage again, but was restored in 1948.
