Biessum is located on - actually around - a terp, which is one of the best preserved in the province of Groningen. The original star-shaped layout can still be found almost completely. The houses and farms are located along the ox alley De Ossenweg, which is still intact. The eastern layout has partially disappeared due to expansions of Delfzijl-North. Between the brick factory of Hylkema and Biessum runs the Biessumermaar. This water was used to transport tree trunks to the clog factory at Ossenweg 4.
