View of Rottumeroog and Borkum

Description

View of Rottumeroog and BorkumThe name Rottumeroog means: Island (eye) of Rottum. The island was once 60% owned by the then Monastery Juliana in that village. The remaining part was owned by the Old Monastery.
To the north, it borders the North Sea, and to the south, the Wadden Sea. To the west lies Rottumerplaat. The island, together with Rottumerplaat and the Zuiderduintjes (a small residual island south of Rottumeroog), is a protected nature area and falls under the strictest legal provisions of the Nature Conservation Act (Article 17). Rottumeroog and Rottumerplaat are jointly managed by the Rijkswaterstaat, Staatsbosbeheer, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Food Quality. Both islands are not freely accessible, and during the summer period, both Rottumeroog and Rottumerplaat are inhabited by birdwatchers. In spring and autumn, a limited number of excursions are organized to Rottumeroog.
On the island stands an old cast iron lighthouse dating from 1883, which once served as a navigation beacon for sailors. The now useless and decaying Emder lighthouse was recognized as a national monument in 1986 and was completely dismantled in 1989, fully restored on the mainland, brought back to Rottumeroog, and rebuilt in 1990 at the old site.
