The square where the Vismarkt is located was originally the inner harbor of Tiel. There has always been a lot of fishing on the river, mainly salmon fishing. The building of the Vismarkt used to stand next to the Waterpoort, but after the damping of the port, a new Fish Market was built in the 18th century. Even later, a semicircular gallery of Doric columns was added to the building. Unfortunately, the parasols of the catering establishment deprive the view of the Vismarkt.
