The Ambtmanshuis was built in 1525 as an official residence for the 'Ambtmannen' and 'Richters' of Tiel. One of the residents was the legendary Derk Vijgh. Because of his many functions (ambtman, richter and dijkgraaf) he was also called the 'King of Tiel'. In 1938 the polder district of Tielerwaard was located in the Ambtmanshuis. In 1990, the municipality of Tiel bought the building. After a thorough refurbishment, the building is part of the town hall. It is also the home of the Municipal Executive and the administrative secretariat. It is also currently a popular wedding venue.
