Stompwijk, with the neo-Gothic Roman Catholic St. Lawrence Church (1871-1878) as an important eye-catcher, is a picturesque polder village that is mentioned in documents as early as 1347. Nowadays the village is part of the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg. Unfortunately, the village character is in danger of being affected by the advancing urbanization of the surrounding areas.
