The Spanish house was built in the Middle Ages as a chapel of an inn. In the 16th century, it became the town hall. Here, the Spaniards gathered all the men of Naarden in 1572 during the 80-year war, after which they were executed without mercy. After this, Naarden was looted and set on fire. This disaster is commemorated in the three beautiful façade stones on the front. The partially burned building was restored at the end of the 16th century, after which it served as a weigh house for 200 years. In 1809, the building was requisitioned by the French occupiers for housing soldiers. After the departure of the French in 1813, a bakery for the army was established. In enormous ovens – which are still visible – as many as 1000 loaves could be baked at once. Now, the fun and educational Weighing Museum is housed in the Spanish House.
