The Rottemeren were created after the reclamation of the surrounding polders in the 17th and 18th centuries when the river Rotte (originating from Rotta, in which "rot" means muddy or turbid and "a" or "aa" means water) started to act as a drainage. The recreational areas around the Rottemeren have a size of about 900 ha. In harsh winters, this is a popular area for skating on natural ice. At the place of the photo is a stamp post of the "Molentocht De Rottemeren". Participants will receive a medal afterwards.
