In the 16th century, peat extraction in the vast and low-lying peatland formed the Langeraarse Plassen consisting of three lakes separated by peat dikes: the Zuidplas (approx. 65 ha), the Noord- or Oostplas (approx. 65 ha) and the Geerplas (approx. 35 ha). The peat dikes (or peat quays) were created because the relatively narrow strips that were used as roads were not mined. The lakes are connected to each other, although at the moment, due to experiments to increase the water quality, the connection between the Noordplas and the Geerpolder Plas is closed
