Hilversum Airport

Source: Streekarchief Hilversum

Description

The Gooisch Airport Action Committee was able to rent a large piece of land south of Hilversum from the Dutch Reformed Church in Naarden in 1938. The meadows were leveled and drained in 1938 as part of a public works project. During World War II, the occupiers used the airport as a diversion harbor and for test flights. In 1948, the airport was opened for sport aviation and has been used for that purpose to this day.
