After much resistance by the Erfgooiers, in 1634 the national government gave permission to reclaim a piece of land in the Gooi area. A rectangular piece of land was divided into elongated lots and sold to wealthy Amsterdammers. In the beginning, the land was used for agriculture. But soon summer houses were erected. Eventually, they became country estates with permanent residence.
