The area derives its name from a former homestead that appears on a map of 1636. It was a substantial house at the time. Then there was the Blauwe Kamer farm, and still later a brick factory of the same name that produced bricks until 1975. Due to changing production methods, these and many other small brick factories came to an end. The floodplain was given a new purpose; Through nature development, the conditions have been created for a natural riverbank to exist again.
In 1992, the Blue Room was one of the first projects where, according to the ideas of Plan Ooievaar, the summer quay of the floodplain was crossed in order to restore the natural dynamics of the riverside landscape. As a result, the low-lying area is flooded even with a slight increase in the water level in the river. Combined with the use of large grazers, this has created a more diverse landscape.
In 2002, the Grebbeberg, which forms the south side of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, was connected to the Blue Room. Since then, the Koniks and Galloways have had a generous high-water escape area. As part of the main ecological structure, the Blue Room is part of a project in which the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, the Veluwe and the river banks of the Maas and Waal rivers are connected. To this end, a large number of obstacles, such as the N225, still need to be resolved.
