In 1350, the old Naarden was razed to the ground during the Hook and Cod disputes. In the current landscape, this city was located about 2 km northeast of the current city, now in the Gooimeer. Before the construction of the Afsluitdijk, the water of the former Zuiderzee was powerful and part of the coast was always knocked away during storms. That is why in 1350 it was safer for Naarden to build the new city inland.
