From 1918 onwards, ships carried shells that were burned into quicklime in these lime kilns. This lime was needed in construction. From the mid-seventies the ovens fell into disuse. After a restoration in 1981, the towers were demolished in 1989, but the towers were rebuilt in 1997 by enthusiastic entrepreneurs and administrators. The lime kilns are now part of the catering facilities of the port of Huizen.
