For sand extraction, large areas in Gooi have been excavated. The heritage organization Stad en Lande van Gooiland established contacts to excavate this land in order to make money and acquire better pasture land. The lime sand factory 'Rijsbergen' used sand from the Oostermeent quarry. After excavation, steep walls remained where bank swallows found a good nesting opportunity.
