The Forest of the Intransigent in Almere is a national resistance monument and park that was opened on April 29, 1993. It is a forest of which each tree represents a fallen resistance participant from the Second World War.
Former resistance fighter Harry Verheij came up with the idea of creating a resistance memorial forest in 1991. At that time, there was no place in the Netherlands where all executed resistance fighters were honoured. Almere was chosen as the location because it is a young city full of a future. The forest is located in the Verzetswijk on the Vrijheidsdreef next to the Hannie Schaftpark and the Leeghwaterplas.
