The Petruskerk is the largest church building in the village of Leens in the Dutch municipality of Het Hogeland and is located on one of the mounds on which the village is built. Romanesque, Romano-Gothic and Gothic elements can be found in the medieval church. The present church will not have been the first church in Leens. The Ommelanden were Christianized by Liudger, who would later become bishop of Münster. Together with East Frisia, the Ommelanden formed the archdeaconate of Frisia. This was subdivided into deanery, which were called provostship here. According to tradition, the provost's abbeys, of which Leens was one, go back to the churches that Liudger himself is said to have founded at the end of the eighth century. The first church will date from that period. The patronage also indicates an important position as the first church in the region. The provost abbey of Leens, which comprised twelve fairs, coincided with the historic area of the Marne.
